The Trust Gap: What Management Believes vs. What Stakeholders Actually Say

Finding out whether stakeholders actually trust an organisation requires comparing an internal survey of what management believes against structured conversations with stakeholders outside the usual circle, since the gap between those two pictures is itself the most useful finding the exercise produces. Management's view of stakeholder trust is structurally biased toward optimism, because the conversations leadership has day to day tend to be with stakeholders who are already reasonably positive.

Why management's view is systematically too rosy

Senior leaders mostly interact with stakeholders who chose to engage, customers who stayed loyal, community representatives who show up to meetings, employees comfortable enough to speak in a leadership forum. The stakeholders with the most negative views are usually the ones least likely to volunteer that view directly to management.

How to reach the stakeholders outside management's usual circle

Structured, independently conducted interviews, not surveys distributed by the company itself, which carry an implicit signal about who's asking, specifically targeting stakeholders who haven't been part of regular engagement, including ones who may have disengaged precisely because of low trust.

What to actually do with a large trust gap once it's found

Treat the gap itself as the primary finding to report to leadership, not just the stakeholder feedback underneath it. A leadership team that understands how far its own perception has drifted from reality tends to respond very differently than one simply handed a list of complaints.
